About Beinn Bhan

Dominating the Applecross peninsula, this sandstone giant is defined by its spectacular eastern face, where a series of tiered, dramatic corries cut deep into the plateau. While the ascent from the west is relatively straightforward, the true character of this Corbett lies in the scale of its massive, terraced cliffs.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Scottish Gaelic as 'White Mountain'. This is somewhat ironic given the hill is primarily composed of dark Torridonian sandstone, but the name likely refers to the way light catches the pale quartzite screes on the upper slopes or its tendency to hold snow.
  • The eastern face is home to six great corries, the most famous being Coire na Poite. These are renowned among climbers for their massive, tiered sandstone buttresses and provide some of the most reliable winter ice climbing routes in the Applecross area.
  • Standing on the summit offers a clear, unobstructed line of sight across the Inner Sound to the jagged Black Cuillin ridge on Skye and the flat-topped silhouette of Raasay. To the north, the grey quartzite peaks of Liathach and Beinn Eighe in Torridon are clearly visible.
  • Despite its name and dramatic eastern crags, the standard approach from the Applecross road is remarkably gentle, leading some to mistake it for a straightforward moorland stroll until they peer over the terrifying vertical drop into the corries.
