Did You Know?

  • The name Mulfran is Welsh for 'cormorant' (literally 'sea-crow'). While an unusual name for an inland peak, it likely refers to the dark, hunched appearance of the ridge when viewed from the surrounding valleys.
  • The hill sits on the edge of the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The surrounding slopes are dotted with the remains of 19th-century limestone quarrying and ironstone workings that once fueled the furnaces of the Ebbw Vale.
  • From the summit, the view to the east is dominated by the distinctive profile of the Blorenge, while to the north, the green expanse of the Usk Valley provides a sharp contrast to the urban settlements of Brynmawr and Nantyglo to the south.
  • The ascent is often combined with a walk through the nearby Clydach Gorge, one of the most ecologically significant limestone ravines in South Wales, featuring dramatic waterfalls and ancient woodland.
  • Given the hill's exposure to the prevailing winds, a walk here provides an excellent opportunity to test the wind-resistance of your waterproofs while looking down on the traffic of the A465 Heads of the Valleys road.
