About Penllyn Forest Top

Located in the western reaches of the Berwyns, this quiet summit sits within the dense coniferous plantations of Penllyn Forest. While the surrounding forestry defines much of the approach, the top offers a secluded vantage point over the upper Dee Valley and towards the higher, more rugged peaks of the main Berwyn ridge.

Did You Know?

  • The name Penllyn is derived from the Welsh for 'Head of the Lake', referencing its historical location within the ancient cantref that overlooks the northern end of Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake).
  • From clearings near the summit, walkers can look east across the deep incisions of the Ceidiog valley toward the much higher silhouettes of the main Berwyn ridge, including Moel Sych.
  • Unlike the open moorland typical of the high Berwyns, this top is defined by its commercial forestry, requiring careful navigation through a complex network of logging tracks.
  • If you enjoy the rhythmic geometry of sitka spruce and the peculiar silence of a dense plantation, you will find this summit significantly more rewarding than the average hillwalker.
