Geology
As you walk up Wether Law, you are standing on the Hawick Group, a geological layer made of a sandstone rock called wacke.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from 'wether', a castrated ram, indicating this was historically grazing land for sheep farming in the Scottish Borders — a practice that continues across these hills today.
  • West Cairn Hill, the taller neighbour lying to the west beyond the Cauldstane Slap pass, rises 53 metres higher at 562 metres and is often climbed in combination with Wether Law.
  • The Cauldstane Slap, an ancient drove road running between the two council areas nearby, was once a major route for moving livestock between Edinburgh and the Border towns.
