Black Craig

A compact summit in the eastern Galloway Hills, rising to 528 metres above the Carsphairn and Scaur Water valleys. The hill forms part of a horseshoe walk often combined with neighbouring Donalds. Its modest height belies open moorland terrain typical of this quieter corner of southern Scotland's hill country.

• •The name Black Craig comes from Scots, referring to the dark rocky outcrops that characterise the summit area—a common descriptive naming pattern in the Southern Uplands where Scots dialect rather than Gaelic dominated.
• •Despite its modest height, Black Craig holds three separate hill classifications: a Dodd (requiring 500 metres height), a Donald Dewey (Scottish hills between 500-609m), and a Tump (requiring 30 metres of prominence on all sides).
• •The hill sits in the less-frequented eastern Galloway Hills, where walkers are far outnumbered by sheep, and where the rounded, heather-clad ridges offer solitude that the higher Merrick range to the west rarely provides.
