Creag Dhubh

A rocky 527-metre summit perched above Newtonmore in the Central Highlands, overlooking Strathspey and Glen Banchor. The steep, craggy slopes and broken ridgeline demand careful navigation, but the effort is rewarded with views across to Creag Meagaidh and the Corrieyairack Pass. A genuine hill walk despite its modest height.

• •The name derives from Scottish Gaelic, meaning 'the black crag' – a reference to the dark, weathered rock faces that characterise the summit area and give the hill its distinctive appearance from the valley below.
• •Despite standing well below Corbett height at 756 metres, Creag Dhubh is often regarded as a true mountain due to its steep terrain, complex ridgeline, and the technical challenge it presents to walkers.
• •The hill sits in a commanding position between Glen Banchor to the north and the broad Spey valley to the south, offering surprisingly extensive views given its height – including distant Creag Meagaidh some 20 kilometres to the west.
• •The craggy slopes and broken ground make direct ascents more challenging than the modest elevation might suggest, requiring hillwalkers to pick their line carefully through the rocky terrain.
