About Meall Meadhonach

Situated at the heart of Suilven’s iconic, weathered sandstone ridge, this central peak offers a more rugged experience than its famous neighbour, Caisteal Liath. Reaching it requires a scramble across an airy saddle, rewarding walkers with an exposed position overlooking the lochan-studded wilderness of Inverpolly and the distant profile of Stac Pollaidh.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Scottish Gaelic as 'Middle Round Hill,' marking its position as the central point of the Suilven ridge between the higher Caisteal Liath and the lower Meall Beag.
  • Reaching this summit is a significant step up in difficulty from the main peak; it requires navigating a series of steep sandstone tiers and a narrow, rocky col that feels remarkably exposed in high winds.
  • The hill is part of a geological 'island' of Torridonian sandstone resting on a basement of Lewisian Gneiss, some of the oldest rock in the world, dating back roughly three billion years.
  • The summit offers a unique longitudinal perspective of the Suilven ridge itself, with views extending across the Glencanisp Forest to the jagged peaks of Quinag and the massive, flat-topped bulk of Canisp.
  • Calling this a 'round hill' is a fine example of Gaelic understatement, given that the ridge is narrow enough in places to make a mountain goat look twice.
