About Beinn Mheadhonach

Tucked away in the remote Forest of Atholl, this substantial Corbett offers a sense of isolation rarely found on the neighbouring Beinn a' Ghlo. Its broad, rounded profile requires a long, atmospheric approach through Glen Tilt, rewarded by wild, expansive views across the empty moors towards the Gaick Forest and the Cairngorms.

Did You Know?

  • The name Beinn Mheadhonach translates from Gaelic as 'Middle Hill'. This describes its central position in the Forest of Atholl, situated between the high plateau of the Gaick Forest to the north and the prominent peaks of the Beinn a' Ghlo massif to the south-east.
  • Due to its remote location deep within the Atholl estate, many walkers choose to use a mountain bike for the first ten kilometres of the approach through Glen Tilt before starting the actual ascent.
  • The summit offers a clear, close-up perspective of the western flanks of Carn nan Gabhar, the highest point of Beinn a' Ghlo, which appears as a massive, scree-covered wall across the valley of the Glas Thuliche.
  • The hill serves as a significant watershed; rainfall on the western slopes flows into the River Tilt and eventually the Tay, while the eastern side drains into the remote Tarf Water.
  • In an area dominated by the massive presence of three popular Munros next door, this hill remains a sanctuary for walkers who find the company of more than two other people a bit too crowded.
