Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Scottish Gaelic Càrn Mòr, meaning 'big cairn' or 'big rocky hill'. While a common name across the Highlands, here it refers to the substantial bulk of the hill when viewed from the tracks of Glen Ey.
  • The hill stands on the historic lands of the Farquharsons of Inverey. To the northwest lies 'The Colonel’s Bed', a narrow rocky gorge in Glen Ey where John Farquharson, the 'Black Colonel', famously hid from government troops after the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689.
  • From the summit, there is an excellent, unobstructed view across the deep trench of Glen Ey towards the sprawling mass of An Socach and the three distinct peaks of the Beinn a' Ghlo range to the southwest.
  • Carn Mor forms part of the high ground separating Glen Ey from Glen Clunie to the east. It is frequently climbed as part of a high-level moorland circuit including its neighbour, Carn na Moine, offering a sense of isolation rarely found near the main Braemar roads.
  • Despite being named 'The Big Hill', it is lower than almost every major peak in the surrounding Cairngorms National Park, making the title feel somewhat optimistic in such company.
