Did You Know?

  • The name 'Hay' derives from the Old English 'haga', meaning a fence or enclosure, a root it shares with the nearby town of Hay-on-Wye. The 'Bluff' describes the sudden, steep northern face that drops away from the mountain's high, peat-covered plateau.
  • The summit is a key waypoint on the Offa’s Dyke Path, a 177-mile National Trail. Walking the ridge here places you on the historic frontier between Wales and England, with the border effectively following the line of the escarpment.
  • The hill overlooks the Gospel Pass, the highest road pass in Wales. It is named for the 12th-century Crusaders who are said to have preached the Gospel here as they passed through the Black Mountains.
  • Looking north from the trig pillar, the view extends over the flat Herefordshire plains toward the distant Clee Hills and the Malverns. To the southwest, the ridge continues toward the neighbouring summit of Twmpa, also known as Lord Hereford’s Knob.
  • The summit is one of the few places in the Black Mountains where you are just as likely to encounter a paraglider waiting for a breeze as a hillwalker, as the updrafts from the bluff's steep face are famous among local flyers.
