Did You Know?

  • Meall Mòr translates from Gaelic as the 'Big Lump' or 'Large Rounded Hill'. It is a common descriptive name across the Highlands, but here it perfectly captures the hill’s bulky presence as it looms over the village of Glencoe and the mouth of the glen.
  • The summit is an excellent vantage point for inspecting the formidable Aonach Eagach ridge. Looking north across the glen, walkers can clearly see the serrated peaks of the Chancellor and the Crazy Pinnacles, providing a sense of the ridge’s scale without the vertigo-inducing exposure.
  • Most walkers approach the peak via the forestry tracks from the old Glencoe Hospital site or combine it with a visit to its dramatic neighbour, Sgòrr na Cìche (the Pap of Glencoe). The final pull to the summit of Meall Mòr is pathless and often boggy, requiring decent navigation in low cloud.
  • Its status as a Graham—a hill between 2,000 and 2,500 feet with at least 150 metres of drop—makes it a popular target for peak-baggers seeking to escape the busier Munro summits of the Bidean nam Bian massif.
  • In a country where 'Meall Mòr' is one of the most frequent entries in the gazetteer, this particular version is often referred to as Meall Mòr (Glencoe) to avoid confusion with its siblings near Ardlui, Loch Katrine, or Luss.
