Foel Cocyn

Rising above the southern bank of the Mawddach Estuary, this modest Marilyn offers a quiet alternative to the rugged peaks of the Cadair Idris range. Its grassy slopes provide a straightforward ascent, rewarding walkers with a superb perspective across the water toward Barmouth and the distant, jagged outlines of the Rhinogydd.

• •The name is derived from the Welsh 'Foel', meaning a bare or bald hill, while 'Cocyn' refers to a small mound or heap, neatly describing its profile when viewed from the surrounding valleys.
• •Positioned at the western fringe of the Cadair Idris group, the summit offers an exceptional vantage point for studying the Mawddach Estuary as it snakes toward the sea under the iconic Barmouth Bridge.
• •It is frequently visited as part of a longer circuit including the nearby hills of Pared y Cefn-hir and Craig y Llyn, providing a lower-level, often marshy alternative when the higher summits are lost in the cloud.
• •Despite its status as a Marilyn, its proximity to the more dramatic crags of the main range means you are far more likely to share the summit with a stray sheep than a fellow walker.
