Moel Fynydd [Craig y Castell]

Perched above the Mawddach, this modest peak punches well above its weight for views. Featuring the Iron Age fort Craig y Castell, it’s the ideal choice for hikers who want mountain drama without the structural knee failure associated with the neighbouring Cadair Idris.

• •The summit is home to the remains of a prehistoric hillfort, where ancient residents enjoyed premium estuary views long before property prices skyrocketed. Its defensive stone ramparts are still clearly visible to the eagle-eyed hiker today.
• •Geologically, the fell is a rugged outcrop of volcanic rock, providing a much firmer footing than the boggy moorland found further inland. It stands as a silent sentinel over the Mawddach, watching the tides turn for millennia.
• •It is located near the beautiful Cregennen Lakes, a spot so photogenic that it has graced more calendars than most professional models. The walk between the lakes and the summit is arguably the finest short ramble in Southern Eryri.
• •From the summit, the Barmouth Bridge looks like a toothpick construction in a giant’s sandbox. Watching the tiny trains crawl across the estuary is strangely hypnotic, provided the wind doesn't knock the binoculars out of your hand.
• •The climb from Arthog involves a series of steep, moss-slicked steps that effectively serve as a natural fitness test. If you reach the top without questioning your life choices, you are likely either an elite athlete or a very determined sheep.
