Oughtmore

Tucked away in the central Sperrin Mountains, this peaty upland offers a tranquil alternative to its loftier neighbours. Its broad, heather-clad slopes require steady footwork through typical Sperrin bogland, eventually rewarding climbers with a fine perspective over the Glenelly Valley and the high, dark ridge of Sawel Mountain to the south.

• •The name is derived from the Irish Ochtmhór, which translates as 'The Great Height' or 'The Great Breast', a reference to the rounded, swelling profile characteristic of many summits in the Sperrin range.
• •Oughtmore is frequently tackled as part of a high-level horseshoe walk that includes Meenard and Sawel Mountain, the latter being the highest point in County Londonderry and the Sperrins.
• •From the summit, walkers can pick out the glistening waters of Lough Foyle and the Inishowen Peninsula to the north, while the distinctive profile of Slieve Gallion dominates the view to the southeast.
• •While officially classified as a Hump, the summit experience often involves significantly more peat-hags and bog-trotting than the relatively dignified title might suggest.
