Carrickbyrne Hill [Carraig Bhrain]

Rising above the Wexford landscape near New Ross, this forested Marilyn is best known for its rugged conglomerate outcrops and 1798 Rebellion history. A network of woodland trails leads to the summit, known as the Rocks of Carrickbyrne, offering clear views across to Slieve Coillte and the winding Barrow estuary.

• •The Irish name Carraig Bhrain translates as 'Bran’s Rock.' While Bran is a common personal name in Irish mythology—often meaning 'raven'—local lore suggests it refers to a specific chieftain who once held the hill as a stronghold.
• •The hill served as a major camp for the United Irishmen during the 1798 Rebellion. It was from this vantage point that thousands of rebels prepared for the Battle of New Ross, though the site is also somberly linked to the nearby Scullabogue Barn tragedy.
• •Geologically, the summit is composed of Old Red Sandstone conglomerate. These jagged, weather-beaten 'Rocks' provide a natural viewing platform toward the Blackstairs Mountains and Mount Leinster to the north.
• •The hill is managed as a forest park, featuring a mix of commercial conifers and older broadleaf stands. The rocky outcrops hidden within the trees have become a popular spot for local bouldering due to the exceptionally grippy texture of the stone.
• •Despite standing at only 234 metres, Carrickbyrne qualifies as a Marilyn because it is the highest point for miles around, proving that prominence is more about the company you keep than your actual height.
