Did You Know?

  • The hillfort evolved in three distinct stages, starting around 300 BC and later expanding to a massive 26-acre enclosure. It was basically the Llŷn Peninsula's version of Iron Age urban sprawl, minus the coffee shops.
  • Giraldus Cambrensis documented a stone castle built here in 1188 by the sons of Owain Gwynedd. It stands as one of Wales’ earliest stone fortifications, proving that medieval family feuds were best resolved from the highest possible vantage point.
  • From the summit, you can see Anglesey, Snowdonia, and even the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland on a clear day. It is the ideal place to practice your long-distance squinting while pretending you can actually see Dublin.
  • Geologically, the fell is an igneous intrusion that stubbornly refused to erode along with the rest of the surrounding landscape. It is a massive plug of volcanic rock that serves as a permanent reminder of the area’s fiery, albeit ancient, past.
  • The ascent is remarkably short, yet the local gorse bushes have a supernatural ability to snag even the most expensive waterproofs. You will likely reach the top feeling victorious but looking like you have lost a wrestling match with a disgruntled bramble patch.
