Did You Know?

  • The name Sgùrr Bàn translates from Scottish Gaelic as 'White Peak'. This is a literal description of the mountain's upper slopes, which are carpeted in shattered white quartzite that makes the summit shimmer even on overcast days.
  • Situated in the heart of 'The Great Wilderness', Sgurr Ban is one of the most remote Munros in Scotland. Reaching it requires a significant expedition, usually involving an overnight stay at the Shenavall bothy or a very long day trip from Kinlochewe.
  • The summit offers a spectacular vantage point over the Fuar Loch towards the sheer cliffs of A' Mhaighdean, often regarded as one of the finest and most isolated mountain views in the British Isles.
  • Geologically, the hill is distinct from its Torridonian sandstone neighbours. Its capping of Cambrian quartzite creates a stark, barren landscape of blocky boulders and scree that is notably different from the terraced rock found elsewhere in the range.
  • After the considerable effort required to reach this point, you may find the summit plateau's lack of shelter a sober reminder that, in Fisherfield, the landscape is very much in charge.
