If you spend enough time walking in Cumbria, you eventually develop a very specific type of appreciation for things that are not there.

You appreciate the fact that when you stand on the summit of Blencathra, your view of the northern fells is not interrupted by a row of giant, buzzing metal pylons. You appreciate that when you walk along the shores of Thirlmere, the silence is not broken by the metallic shriek of a commercial zipwire. And you appreciate that when the sun goes down over Wastwater, the sky actually turns black enough to see the Milky Way, rather than being washed out by the orange glow of a holiday park.

None of this is an accident.

It is very easy to look at the Lake District and assume it looks the way it does because it is a National Park, protected by some natural law of preservation. But the fells are a battleground of ideas, and they have been for a century. The reason Cumbria still feels wild, quiet, and slightly inhospitable—in the best possible way—is largely down to an independent charity called the Friends of the Lake District.

If the National Trust is the landlord of the fells, the Friends are the legal brawlers who stop them from being turned into a theme park.

The Birth of the Park

Like the National Trust, the Friends of the Lake District were born out of a sense of urgency. In 1934, a group of walkers, writers, and climbers gathered because they saw the fells being chipped away.

In the 1930s, the threats were different but no less damaging. Speculative forestry companies wanted to blanket the beautiful, open valleys of Eskdale and Dunnerdale with dense, dark blocks of sitka spruce. Water companies wanted to reservoir everything in sight. Private developers wanted to build lakeside villas and restrict access to the water.

The Friends did not have the money to buy up the land like Beatrix Potter did. Instead, they used the much cheaper, much noisier weapon of public campaigning.

Their first major achievement was a long, bureaucratic slog that took nearly twenty years: they spearheaded the campaign to establish the Lake District as a National Park in the first place. When the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act was finally passed in 1949, it paved the way for the Lake District's formal designation as a National Park in 1951—becoming one of the very first in the country.

But once the boundaries were drawn, their job did not end. It got harder.

Fighting the Disneyfication of the Fells

There is a constant, quiet pressure to make the Lake District more "accessible," which is often code for "profitable."

To a certain type of developer, a quiet valley or a dramatic crag is not a place of natural beauty; it is an underutilized asset. They look at a steep hillside and see a track for off-road vehicles. They look at a quiet lake and see a speedboating marina.

This is where the Friends of the Lake District do their most important, and often most unpopular, work. They are the planners' worst nightmare. This isn't just a couple of passionate amateurs with a clipboard, either; the Friends officially represent the CPRE (Campaign to Protect Rural England) within Cumbria. This link-up gives them a national framework and explains why they have such a professional, muscular planning department relative to their size.

They also have a massive international shield to play: in 2017, the Lake District was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Far from just being a tourist-facing badge of honor, this status legally obligates the preservation of the area's "cultural landscape"—a card the Friends happily throw onto the table whenever a developer gets too ambitious.

If someone wants to build a luxury resort on a quiet lakeshore, the Friends are there to object. When a company wanted to install a commercial zipwire over Thirlmere reservoir, the Friends galvanized public outrage, rallied the walking community, and mounted a fierce defense.

Yet, the definitive, glorious nail in the coffin came from an unlikely ally: the Ministry of Defence. The MoD stepped in with a formal objection because Thirlmere happens to sit directly under a flight path heavily used for low-flying military fast-jet training. Apparently, a high-tensile steel zipwire is considered a major hazard to a Eurofighter Typhoon screaming through the valleys. Between public fury and military flight safety, the plans were soundly scrapped.

It is easy to paint this kind of campaigning as NIMBYism, or the work of miserable traditionalists who hate fun. But if you are a walker, you understand the value of quiet. You know that once a valley is commercialized, it never goes back. Once you put a tarmac road or a roaring tourist attraction into a quiet corner of the fells, that specific sense of wildness is gone forever.

The Friends are the people who hold the line against what they call the "Disneyfication" of the Cumbrian landscape.

Moving the Pylons

Their campaigns are not just about stopping things; sometimes they are about hiding them.

If you have ever walked in the western Lake District, around the quiet, beautiful valley of the River Duddon or near Harter Fell, you might have noticed that the landscape feels remarkably open.

A few years ago, the National Grid proposed building a massive line of high-voltage electricity pylons directly across this landscape to connect a proposed nuclear power station on the coast. These would not have been small wooden poles; they were massive, metal giants that would have marched across the ridges, completely dominating the skyline.

The Friends did not just complain; they ran a relentless, highly technical campaign to force the National Grid to put the cables underground. It was an incredibly expensive, difficult argument to win, but they won it, securing a commitment to bury the cables through the most sensitive parts of the National Park.

As it turned out, the trenches were never actually dug. In late 2018, Toshiba pulled out of the proposed Moorside nuclear power station, and the entire £2.8 billion pylon scheme was abandoned. So, the sky over Harter Fell is blank today because the project died entirely, rather than because the cables are buried underground. But the victory remains a massive precedent: the Friends proved that even the National Grid can be legally forced to respect the skyline.

Dirt Under the Fingernails: Fell Care Days

While half of the organization is busy arguing over planning law in offices, the other half is usually found in a bog, covered in mud, holding a spade.

The Friends own and manage several small pockets of land themselves, including High Borrowdale—a remote valley in the far east of the park that was heavily degraded by overgrazing. Over the last two decades, they have turned it into a massive restoration project, planting thousands of native trees, restoring upland hay meadows, and letting the river find its natural, meandering course again.

They also run "Fell Care Days." These are mass-volunteering events where regular walkers, locals, and anyone who cares about the hills gets together to do the heavy lifting.

If you go to one, you will not be listening to lectures. You will be clearing invasive Himalayan balsam from riverbanks, rebuilding dry stone walls that have collapsed under the weight of winter frosts, or fixing upland paths before they turn into deep erosion scars. It is muddy, satisfying work that connects the people who walk on the land directly with the effort required to keep it alive.

Keeping the Dark Skies Dark

The final battleground for the Friends is one you can only see at night.

Light pollution is creeping into the Lake District from every side. As caravan parks expand, streetlights modernize, and security lights are left on, the deep, ink-black night of the fells is slowly dissolving into a gray haze.

For a walker who has ever had to navigate off a ridge like Helvellyn by headtorch, or camped out on a high col, the quality of the night sky is part of the wildness.

The Friends are currently campaigning to have the Lake District designated as a "Dark Sky Reserve." This does not mean turning off everyone’s lights and living in the dark; it means working with local councils, businesses, and farmers to use smart, shielded lighting that points down at the ground rather than up at the clouds.

It is a quiet, slow-burning campaign, but if you have ever stood on a high summit at midnight and looked up at a sky thick with stars, you know it is a fight worth having.

The Price of Silence

Like the National Trust, the Friends of the Lake District are often invisible until something goes wrong. If you have had a perfect day on the fells—free from noise, free from ugly development, and surrounded by nothing but grass, stone, and sky—it is because someone, somewhere, spent their Tuesday arguing about planning policy on your behalf.

They are not a government body, and they do not get state funding. They are simply an independent group of people who believe that some landscapes are too important to be sold off to the highest bidder.

They make sure that when you head up into the hills to get away from the modern world, the modern world has actually been kept at bay.
