Did Chris Bonington ever reach the summit of Everest himself?

Yes, he did—but not until 1985 when he was 50 years old, and on a Norwegian expedition where he wasn't the leader. During his famous 1975 expedition as leader, he was managing logistics lower down while Doug Scott and Dougal Haston reached the summit.

How many climbers died on Bonington's expeditions?

Several close colleagues died on expeditions he led or was part of: Ian Clough on Annapurna in 1970, Mick Burke on Everest in 1975, Nick Estcourt on K2 in 1978, and Peter Boardman and Joe Tasker on Everest in 1982. These losses were part of the harsh reality of expedition leadership.

What was Chris Bonington's job before becoming a full-time climber?

He served in the RAF and Royal Tank Regiment, then became a mountaineering instructor at the Army Outward Bound School. In 1962, Unilever gave him an ultimatum between management training and climbing—he chose climbing and made his living through mountaineering journalism and photography.
