When we talk about the great pioneers of the Scottish Highlands, we usually picture men like Sir Hugh Munro—aristocrats with landed estates and the social standing to dictate the rules of the mountains. But John Rooke Corbett was different. Born in 1876, he was a district valuer and a clerk from Bristol. He didn't have a title, he didn't live in a castle, and for most of his life, he didn't even live in Scotland.

Corbett was a man of the "Long Walk" in the most literal sense. While Munro’s world was one of diplomacy and high society, Corbett’s world was defined by the precise, meticulous nature of land assessment. He was an outsider who looked at the Highlands not as a social playground, but as a challenge of geography and endurance. He was obsessed with the hills, but he was also obsessed with the truth. And the truth, as he saw it, was that Sir Hugh Munro’s 3,000ft rule was leaving out some of the most spectacular mountains in the country.

The Reaction to the Munros

To understand why we have the "Corbetts," you have to understand the shadow cast by the Munros. In 1891, Sir Hugh Munro’s Tables became the law of the Highlands. Suddenly, every hiker in Britain was looking up, obsessed with the magic 3,000ft mark. If a mountain was 3,001 feet, it was a "Munro" and a trophy. If it was 2,999 feet, it was effectively invisible.

Corbett realized that this was a mistake. He knew from his own exhaustive travels that some of the most rugged, dangerous, and soul-stirring peaks in the Highlands were being walked past simply because they fell short of Munro's arbitrary line. He decided that these "near misses" deserved their own recognition. But he didn't just want to make a list of "short Munros"—he wanted to create a list that was actually more logical and more scientifically sound than Sir Hugh’s.

The Mathematics of the Mountain: The 500ft Rule

While Munro relied on his own "subjective feel" to decide if a peak was a separate mountain or just a "top," John Corbett was a man of the map. He wanted a rule that nobody could argue with. He spent years cross-referencing Ordnance Survey data to identify every peak in Scotland between 2,500 feet and 3,000 feet.

But his real genius was the "prominence" rule. He decided that for a mountain to make his list, it had to have a 500ft (152.4m) drop on all sides.

This is what makes the Corbetts so respected by serious hikers today. On a Munro, you can often walk along a high ridge and "bag" three peaks in an afternoon without much effort. On a Corbett, the 500ft rule means every single peak is a standalone giant. There are no easy ridges here. To get from one Corbett to the next, you almost always have to descend thousands of feet into the valley and climb all over again. Corbett didn't just want to count mountains; he wanted to make sure you earned every single one of them.

Why Corbetts are Often Harder

There is a common trap that new hikers fall into: they assume that because a mountain is lower, it must be easier. Any experienced Scottish walker will tell you that the Corbetts are often far more brutal than the Munros.

The reason is simple: popularity. Because the Munros are the "famous" ones, they have well-worn paths and stone staircases. The Corbetts, sitting just below that 3,000ft line, are the "wild" mountains. More often than not, there is no path at all. To climb a Corbett, you have to fight your way through waist-deep heather, cross hidden river systems, and negotiate "peat hags"—deep, muddy trenches that can swallow a hiker to the waist.

It is a world of total self-reliance. On a Corbett, the silence is absolute, and the navigation is constant. You aren't just walking; you are pioneering. This is exactly how Corbett liked it. The Logistics of a Spartan Pioneer

Corbett was legendary for his "Spartan" approach to travel. He would take the train north and then use a heavy, gearless bicycle to reach the furthest glens of the North West. To save time and money, he rarely stayed in hotels or inns. He was known to sleep in barns, under haystacks, or simply on the open hillside, wrapped in his heavy tweeds.

He moved through the Highlands like a ghost—quiet, determined, and entirely uninterested in the fame that usually followed such feats. He didn't have Gore-Tex or GPS; he had wool, leather, and an iron will. He proved that a clerk with a bicycle and a map could conquer a country just as effectively as any aristocrat.

The Sculpted Giants: From The Cobbler to Quinag

Because the Corbetts are lower, they often have a more dramatic, "sculpted" appearance than the massive granite domes of the higher Munros. Corbett's list of 222 peaks includes some of the most iconic shapes in the world, each with a character that demands a separate journey:

The Cobbler (Ben Arthur): At 2,891ft, it missed Munro’s list by less than 110 feet. Yet its jagged, triple-peaked summit is far more dramatic than most 3,000ft peaks. Reaching the true top requires "threading the needle"—crawling through a natural hole in the rock and scrambling up a sheer face with a terrifying drop on either side.
Canisp: Standing tall at 2,779ft, Canisp is the massive, pyramid-like neighbor to the famous Suilven. While it lacks the sheer verticality of its sister peak, its commanding bulk offers some of the best panoramic views of the Assynt wilderness. It is a quintessential Corbett—stony, isolated, and requiring a long, boggy approach that perfectly illustrates Corbett's "Long Walk" philosophy.
Goatfell: Rising directly from the sea on the Isle of Arran, it proves Corbett's point about scale. Because you start at sea level, you feel every inch of the 2,867ft climb. It is a vertical battle from the salt water to the granite spire, offering views that stretch all the way to Ireland.
Quinag: A magnificent massif in Sutherland that looks like a fortress. Quinag is unique because it boasts three distinct Corbetts on one enormous structure: Sgùrr nan Collamach, Sail Ghorm, and Sail Gharbh. Its ridges are vast and airy, composed of ancient Lewisian gneiss and Torridonian sandstone, giving the walker a sense of stepping back into deep geological time.
Ben Aden: Located deep within the wilds of Knoydart, Ben Aden is often cited as the most difficult Corbett to reach. It sits in a "heart of darkness" region, surrounded by jagged peaks and deep lochs. There are no easy routes to Ben Aden; it requires a multi-day expedition just to stand at its base, epitomizing the isolation that John Corbett so admired.

The Legacy: The First True "Compleatist"

John Rooke Corbett finally finished his own list in 1930, but he was so modest that he didn’t even push to have it published. He kept his exact notes and measurements private, happy with the satisfaction of his own achievement. After he died in 1949 his sister passed his papers on to the Scottish Mountaineering Club, and they realised just how significant what he’d done was.

Corbett was actually the first person to truly conquer the "British Round"—climbing every 3,000ft peak in Scotland, England, Wales, and Ireland, as well as the 222 peaks on his own list. He didn't have a dog like Munro’s "Dhu" to keep him company; he was a man who found his own peace in the solitude of the hills.

Today, those who finish the list are a small, dedicated community. It wasn't until 1960 that the first person other than Corbett—a climber named Eric Maxwell—officially finished the 222 peaks. To "compleat" the Corbetts is to have climbed over 550,000 feet of vertical ascent—the equivalent of climbing from sea level to the top of Mount Everest nineteen times.

The Human Legends: The Spirit of the Corbett

The people who follow John Corbett’s list today are often a different breed of hiker. They aren't looking for the crowds of Ben Nevis; they are looking for the raw, unpolished challenge that Corbett himself thrived on.

One of the most incredible modern feats was achieved by Mick Whitehead, who in the winter of 2001/02 became the first person to complete a continuous "round" of the Corbetts in a single winter. He faced months of brutal Highland snow, gale-force winds, and the constant threat of avalanches, moving between the peaks in conditions that would have sent most hikers home. It was a feat of pure, stubborn endurance that mirrored Corbett's own "Spartan" philosophy.

Then there are those like Hazel Strachan, a modern-day legend who has turned Corbett bagging into a way of life. She has completed multiple "rounds" of the list, often finishing the set of 222 mountains with a speed and frequency that staggers the mountaineering community. For Hazel, the Corbetts aren't just a list to be finished; they are a landscape to be lived in, proving that the obsession John Corbett started a century ago is still very much alive.

Why We Still Follow Him

We follow John Rooke Corbett’s list because he taught us that beauty isn't measured in round numbers. He showed us that a 2,500ft peak can be more rewarding, more technical, and more soul-stirring than the highest mountain in the land.

Sir Hugh Munro gave us the giants, but John Corbett gave us the wilderness. He gave us a reason to look at the "smaller" peaks and realize that they were actually the real challenge. He proved that the best stories are often found in the quietest, most difficult places, and a century later, we are still out there in the heather trying to find them.
