If you’ve spent any time looking at guidebooks or hill-walking apps, you’ve probably seen the word "prominence" (or sometimes "relative height") popped next to the elevation of a mountain.

While elevation tells us how far a peak is above the sea, prominence tells us something arguably more useful for walkers: how much a hill stands out from its neighbours.

Here is a plain-English guide to what it actually means, why it matters for your legs, and why it’s the secret language of UK hill bagging.

The Basic Idea: The 'Re-ascent'

The simplest way to think about prominence is to ask yourself: "If I’m at the summit of this hill, how far do I have to walk down before I start climbing something higher?"

Imagine you are standing on a peak. To get to any mountain that is taller than the one you’re on, you eventually have to go down into a valley, a glen, or a saddle (the lowest point between two peaks). That vertical distance you descended from the summit to that lowest point is the prominence.

Let’s look at two real-world examples to see the difference:

High Prominence (The Independent Mountain): Pike o' Stickle in the Langdale Pikes is the famous sugarloaf dome. Even though it is lower than its neighbour, Harrison Stickle, it has a significant drop around it. You have to descend quite a way into the dip before you can head towards the higher ground of the main group of hills, which makes it feel like a distinct, standalone peak.
Low Prominence (The Ridge Bump): Now look at Nethermost Pike. It is a massive 891m high, but it sits right next to Helvellyn. To get from Nethermost Pike to the higher Helvellyn, you only have to drop down about 22m into a shallow grassy dip. Because the drop is so small, Nethermost Pike doesn't feel like a separate mountain; it feels like a feature on the side of the ridge.

The 'Island' Trick

There is a classic way to visualise this. Imagine the sea level started to rise across the UK. As the water gets higher, the mountain you are standing on eventually becomes its own island.

The prominence is the height of that island above the water at the exact moment the rising tide is about to touch a higher island. If your island stays separate until the water is nearly at the top, you’ve got a very prominent mountain.

If the water only has to rise a few metres before your hill joins up with a bigger neighbour (like the Nethermost Pike example), it isn't very prominent at all.

Meet the 'Parent' Peak

Every hill (except for Mount Everest!) has a Parent Peak. This is the higher mountain that your hill belongs to.

Think of it like a family tree. For example, Harrison Stickle is the highest point in the immediate Langdale Pikes, but even it has a parent. To find a higher point, you have to look further inland towards the higher fells of Central Lakeland. The ground at the very head of the Langdale valley acts as the connection point. This low link is what hitches the Pikes to their higher neighbours further north and west.

Why Do We Care? (The Magic of Lists)

In the UK, we love a list. Whether it’s Munros, Corbetts, or Wainwrights, these lists almost always use prominence to decide what counts as a real mountain versus just a shoulder of a larger hill.

The Marilyns: This is one of the most popular lists for prominence fans. The name is a bit of a joke based on the Scottish Munros. Since the famous 3,000ft Scottish peaks are called Munros (after Sir Hugh Munro), British walkers decided that hills with a prominence of 150m should be called Marilyns (a play on the name Marilyn Monroe). To be a Marilyn, a hill just needs that 150m drop on all sides.
The HuMPs: These are Hundred Metre Prominence hills.
The Simms: Hills over 600m high with at least 30m of prominence.

Using prominence is the fairest way to categorise hills. Without it, a tiny rock on the side of a high mountain might technically be higher than a proper summit elsewhere, which wouldn't make much sense to a walker looking for a standalone challenge.

Does it Change the Walk?

Absolutely. High-prominence hills are often tougher on the legs, but more rewarding for the eyes.

The Effort Factor: You can walk along a high-level plateau and bag several high points without ever doing much climbing between them if the prominence is low. However, look at an iconic trio in the Brecon Beacons: Pen y Fan, Corn Du, and Fan y Big. These peaks are very close together and can look like a straightforward ridge walk on a map. But in practice, the landscape is far more undulating. While Pen y Fan and Corn Du are linked by a high saddle, moving across to Fan y Big involves dropping roughly 150m to 200m into a deep col before you can even start the climb back up. These hills stand independently enough that you are forced into repeated, steep descents and re-ascents, ensuring a lot of hard work for every summit you reach.

The View Factor: High prominence usually means uninterrupted views. Because a prominent hill has a significant drop on all sides, there usually isn't anything immediately in the way to block your 360-degree panorama. Worcestershire Beacon in the Malvern Hills is a prime example — its isolation delivers sweeping, obstruction-free panoramas across counties, valleys, distant Welsh mountains, and even the Bristol Channel, visible from every direction on a clear day.

The Technical Bit: The 'Key Col'

Want to impress your mates at the pub after a walk? Try mentioning the term Key Col.

The Key Col (sometimes called the critical col, linking col, or highest saddle) is the lowest point you have to cross on the way from your summit to any higher ground. In simple terms, it’s the lowest point on the ridge that connects your hill to a taller one.

A helpful way to picture it is to imagine your hill as an island while the sea level slowly rises. As the water climbs, smaller hills disappear first. Eventually your hill would become an island too. The moment it stops being separate and connects to higher land happens at the Key Col. That spot shows how independent your hill really is.

Out on the ground, the Key Col might be a mountain pass, a col, or even a wide valley. For people who enjoy studying maps and summit stats, it matters because it tells you a hill’s prominence. Take the height of the summit and subtract the height of the Key Col. The result is the minimum amount you’d have to descend before climbing something higher.

For example, a Marilyn has at least 150 metres of prominence. That means the Key Col sits at least 150 metres below the summit, so there’s always a proper drop before any climb to higher ground.
