The UK hills have a predictable habit of turning a clear afternoon into a damp, grey void within about twenty minutes. When the horizon vanishes, the shiny smartphone in the pocket often becomes a very expensive paperweight—either the battery has frozen or the GPS has decided that standing in a gully means you’re actually three miles out at sea. This is the moment where a bit of plastic and a magnetized needle become the most important things in the world.

A compass doesn’t need a satellite, a signal, or a charger. It just points North. But while the tool is simple, the person holding it needs to know how to translate those 360 degrees into a safe route home. This isn't about survivalist drama; it’s about having the basic competence to not end up as a news story.

The Right Compass for UK Mountains

For walking in places like the Lake District or the Highlands, a baseplate compass is the only tool for the job. Those military-style metal boxes might look serious, but they’re useless for map reading because they block the view of the paper. A good baseplate compass—think Silva or Suunto—is clear, allowing the map details to show through.

The setup is basic. There’s a Baseplate with a Direction of Travel Arrow on the front. This arrow is the "this way" indicator. There is a rotating Housing (the dial) and a Magnetic Needle with a red end that is obsessed with the North Pole. Inside the dial, there are Orienting Lines and a large arrow outline etched into the floor, usually called "the shed."

Before heading out, check the housing for air bubbles. A tiny bubble is usually fine, but a large one can physically trap the needle, giving a false reading that could lead a walker off a ridge. It’s also worth noting that a standard compass bought for the UK is "balanced" for the Northern Hemisphere. If the plan is to walk in the Andes or the Southern Alps, that needle will drag against the plastic casing and stick. For international travel, a "Global Needle" version is the only way to avoid a mechanical lie.

One rare but catastrophic issue to watch for is Polarity Reversal. If a compass is stored right next to a strong magnet—like a phone or a high-end speaker—for a long time, the needle can actually flip. The "Red" end starts pointing South. Always check the compass against a known direction, like the sun’s position at midday, before relying on it. If the needle says the sun is in the North when it’s clearly in the South, the compass has "swapped ends" and is effectively broken.

How to Take a Bearing from the Map

Taking a bearing is just measuring an angle on the map before trying to follow it on the ground. This part is purely about the relationship between two points on the paper. The magnetic needle can be ignored for now.

Lay the map flat—on a rock, a bag, or a very still friend. Find the current location and the destination. Place the long edge of the compass baseplate so it connects the two points. It is vital to ensure the Direction of Travel Arrow is pointing toward the destination. If the compass is positioned backward, the walk will be a very confident journey in exactly the wrong direction.

Holding the baseplate firmly so it doesn't slide, rotate the housing dial until the Orienting Lines inside are parallel with the vertical blue grid lines on the map. Make sure the "N" on the dial is pointing toward the top of the map. Once those lines are aligned, the grid bearing is "captured" in the dial. The compass can now be lifted off the map; the information is locked in.

Managing Magnetic Variation

This is where the planet decides to be a moving target. Maps are drawn to Grid North, but the needle is attracted to Magnetic North. Historically, in the UK, Magnetic North was always to the West of the map’s grid lines, which led to the old school rule: Grid to Mag, Add.

However, the magnetic pole is currently "commuting" across the UK from West to East. This means the rules are changing depending on exactly where you are standing and how old your map is. In parts of Eastern England, Magnetic North has already crossed over and now sits to the East of Grid North.

The only way to avoid ending up in the wrong valley is to stop relying on old rhymes and actually read the small print in the map legend. It will state the "magnetic variation" and whether it is East or West. If the legend says the variation is West, add those degrees to the dial. If it says East, subtract them.

Pro Tip: Check the print date of the map. Map legends give the variation for the center of the sheet at the time of printing. If that map has been sitting in a kitchen drawer since 2012, the magnetic information in the margin will be significantly out of date. Always account for the annual change noted in that same legend.

Measuring the Journey: Timing and Pacing

Direction is only half of the navigation equation. Knowing which way to walk is useless if there is no idea how far to go. To stay "unlost," direction must be paired with distance.

On the side of a baseplate compass, there are usually rulers for 1:25k and 1:50k scales. However, if the path is wiggly or the leg is longer than the compass, use the Lanyard Trick. Lay the compass string (the lanyard) along the winding route on the map, then straighten the string against the map’s scale bar to get an accurate measurement of the actual distance.

If the map says the next checkpoint is 600 metres away, there are two ways to track that progress:

Timing (Naismith’s Rule): A standard walking pace is roughly 4km/h. Add one minute of time for every 10 metres of ascent. If a leg is 1km with 100m of climbing, it should take about 25 minutes. If that time passes and the landmark hasn't appeared, it’s time to stop and reassess.
Pacing: This is more precise. A walker needs to know how many "double-paces" (every time the right foot hits the ground) they take to cover 100 metres. For most people, it's between 60 and 70. By counting paces, a navigator knows exactly how much ground has been covered.

Walking on a Compass Bearing Safely

With the corrected bearing set and the distance calculated, hold the compass flat at chest height. Turn the entire body—not just the arm—until the red end of the magnetic needle sits perfectly inside the arrow outline (the shed) on the floor of the housing.

When the "red is in the shed," the Direction of Travel Arrow is pointing at the objective. But don't walk while staring at the needle. This leads to a wandering, zig-zagging path and an inevitable trip over a rock. Instead, look down the arrow and pick a distinct landmark in the distance. Walk to that object, stop, reset the "red in the shed," and pick a new landmark further ahead. This "leap-frogging" technique is the most accurate way to travel and keeps the head up and eyes on the terrain.

Navigation Techniques for Low Visibility

When the "clag" (thick mountain mist) drops to five metres, landmarks vanish. In these conditions, navigation becomes a mechanical, disciplined process.

If walking with a partner, use them as a mobile landmark. Send them ahead in the direction the compass is pointing, stopping them just before they disappear into the grey. Direct them to move left or right until they are perfectly aligned with the bearing. Walk to their position and repeat. If solo, the markers have to be much closer—a specific stone or a tuft of grass just a few paces away. It is slow and tedious, but it is the only way to maintain a straight line when there is no horizon to provide context.

Using Back-Bearings as a Sanity Check

A back-bearing is the navigational equivalent of checking the rearview mirror. It’s a quick way to confirm the route hasn't drifted. If there is a known landmark behind—like a specific peak or a trail junction that was just passed—point the Direction of Travel Arrow directly at it.

Instead of trying to put the red needle in the shed, look for the other end of the needle (the black or white end). If that tail end of the needle sits perfectly in the shed while pointing at the object behind, the position is correct. It’s a much faster way to do a 180-degree check than trying to do mental arithmetic with degrees while your hands are cold. If the tail doesn't line up with the shed, the line has slipped.

Relocation: What to Do When Lost

If the realization hits that you are lost, you cannot take a bearing because you don't have a starting point. This is where Relocation comes in. If a few peaks or landmarks are visible, use Resection: take bearings from two or three of those points and draw the lines back on the map. Where they cross is the "X" that marks your spot.

If visibility is zero, use the STOP Rule:

Stop: Calm down and stay put.
Think: When was the last time you were 100% sure of your location?
Observe: What is the ground doing? Is there a fence or a stream nearby?
Plan: Work out a safe strategy to find a "handrail" rather than wandering aimlessly.

Boxing Around Obstacles

Occasionally, a bearing will lead directly into a peat bog, a crag, or an impassable marsh. To stay on course without getting stuck, use the "Boxing" technique.

Turn 90 degrees away from the obstacle and count the paces until the path is clear. Turn 90 degrees back onto the original bearing and walk past the obstacle. Finally, turn 90 degrees back toward the original line and walk the exact same number of paces previously counted. One last 90-degree turn puts the walker back on their original bearing, having "boxed" around the problem without losing the trajectory.

Using Aiming Off to Find Targets

Precision is a noble goal, but in the mountains, it’s often better to be strategically wrong than accidentally right. If trying to hit a tiny point—like a small bridge over a stream—over a long distance in the fog, a tiny error means it’s impossible to know whether the bridge is to the left or the right upon reaching the water.

Aiming Off is the solution. Deliberately aim for a point on the stream a hundred metres to one side of the bridge. When the water is reached, the guesswork is gone; the bridge is definitely in a specific direction. It turns a potential search into a simple walk along a bank.

Handrails and Slope Aspect

There is no need to stare at a compass for miles if the landscape provides a guide. Handrails are linear features on the map that can be followed physically. A stone wall, a fence line, a stream, or a distinct ridge edge are all handrails.

In a total whiteout, the Slope Aspect can be a life-saver. Use the compass to see which way the ground is sloping. If the map indicates the slope should face South, but the compass shows the ground falling away to the North, the navigator has wandered onto the wrong side of a ridge. It’s a simple check that provides an immediate "yes/no" to a location.

Identifying Local Magnetic Interference

A compass is a magnetic tool, meaning it is easily distracted. Modern smartphones are the biggest threat; the magnets and batteries inside can pull a needle off-course by twenty degrees if the phone is kept in a chest pocket near the compass.

Other things to watch out for:

Steel-tipped walking poles: Keep them away from the compass when taking a reading.
Wire fences and gates: These will pull the needle toward them with surprising force.
Geology: Certain rocks are famous for making needles do "The Helicopter" (spinning in circles). The igneous rock on Scafell Pike in the Lakes, parts of the Cuillin on Skye, and areas of the Peak District are all notorious for this.

If the needle looks jumpy or the direction feels fundamentally "wrong," take a few steps back from any potential metal and check the bearing again at arm’s length.

Why the Needle is Always Right

The hardest part of using a compass is the mental discipline. There will come a point where the brain is convinced the path is to the right, while the compass points firmly to the left. This "spatial disorientation" is a powerful trick of the mind, often triggered by fatigue or the disorientation of a whiteout.

Human intuition is remarkably poor at sensing direction once visual landmarks are gone. The needle, however, is a mechanical slave to the Earth’s magnetic field. Unless it is physically broken or sitting next to a smartphone, it is right and the brain is wrong. Learning to ignore that "gut feeling" and trust the tool is what separates a navigator from someone who is simply lost.

Confidence in the hills comes from practice. Don't wait for a storm on Ben Nevis to try a bearing for the first time. Take the compass out on sunny days, identify distant peaks, and practice "aiming off" on familiar ground. When the process becomes muscle memory, the mist stops being a source of panic and becomes just another part of the day's challenge. Nature is indifferent to a lack of preparation; the compass is the only thing that balances the scales.
