Is Jack's Rake safe for beginners?

It depends on what you mean by beginner. While it's graded as a Grade 1 scramble (the easiest category), it crosses a 400-foot cliff face with real consequences if you fall. If you're new to scrambling, have no climbing experience, or aren't comfortable with exposure, there are safer alternatives like Easy Gully or North Rake to reach the same summit.

Where do people go wrong on Jack's Rake?

Most accidents happen when people deviate from the main line, particularly in the upper section where the route becomes less obvious. What looks like easier ground often leads you onto harder, more exposed positions near the edge. Stay in the groove and follow the line of ash trees—the main line exists because it's the safest way through.

Can you turn back once you've started Jack's Rake?

Reversing is possible but daunting, especially once you're committed with tired legs and other parties around you. That's why the decision to turn back needs to happen early, ideally at the bottom when you can honestly assess conditions, your fitness, and your comfort level with exposure.
