About Wooplaw Edge

Rising gently in the northern Cheviots, this rounded grassy ridge overlooks the remote College Valley. It offers a quieter perspective on the landscape than the nearby Pennine Way, providing clear views toward the bulky mass of The Cheviot and the steep, scree-covered slopes of Braydon Crag.

Did You Know?

  • The name is rooted in the Old English hlāw, meaning a rounded hill, a term synonymous with the upland topography of the Anglo-Scottish border.
  • The summit provides a grandstand view of the College Valley, one of the most secluded spots in the Cheviots, where the hills drop steeply toward the Hethpool gorge.
  • The hill is frequently bypassed by walkers on the Pennine Way, who generally prefer the higher ground of the Border Ridge and the nearby peak of The Schil.
  • Given its proximity to the border, a misplaced step to the west is all it takes to turn a walk in Northumberland into a day trip to Scotland.
