About Wester Watery Knowe
Rising from the expansive Mounth plateau near Ballater, this rounded Tump offers a quieter alternative to the busy Munro tracks nearby. At 760 metres, its heathery slopes and peat-hags provide a sense of true Deeside isolation, looking across the high-country towards the jagged north-facing corries of Lochnagar.

Did You Know?
- •The name is rooted in Scots, where a ‘knowe’ refers to a small hill or knoll; the ‘watery’ prefix is a literal description of the boggy terrain and small pools that dot this high-altitude plateau.
- •Though often overlooked by those bagging the popular White Mounth Munros, the summit provides an exceptional vantage point for surveying the sprawling scale of the Balmoral Estate.
- •Looking northwest, the view is dominated by the massive cliffs of Lochnagar, while to the east, the lonely pyramid of Mount Keen stands out against the horizon of the Mearns.
- •Despite its 2,495ft elevation, its naming as a mere ‘knowe’ suggests a level of modesty that the surrounding peat bogs—often deep enough to claim a stray boot—rarely reciprocate.
