Did You Know?

  • The name refers to the gritstone outcrops found near the summit and its role as a primary catchment area for the numerous gills and becks that feed the River Swale.
  • The summit plateau is home to several 'mans'—exceptionally large, well-built stone cairns that act as vital landmarks in an area otherwise dominated by featureless moorland and confusing peat hags.
  • From the 668m summit trig point, the view north captures the lonely white silhouette of the Tan Hill Inn, while to the south, the sprawling mass of Great Shunner Fell dominates the horizon across the deep trench of Swaledale.
  • This hill is classified as a Nuttall and is typically ascended from Keld via the scenic waterfalls of Swinner Gill, a route that passes through the stark remains of the area's lead mining industry.
  • Navigating the plateau requires a certain level of stoicism; if you haven't found yourself knee-deep in a black, peaty soup at least once, you have likely strayed onto a different hill.
