About Threehope Height

Tucked away in the eastern Lowther Hills, this rounded Southern Upland summit offers a quiet alternative to busier peaks. Characterised by steep, grassy slopes and deep surrounding 'hopes', the trig-topped crest provides clear views of the Great Lowther radar station and the sprawling waters of Daer Reservoir to the east.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Scots word 'hope', meaning a small valley or upland glen; the hill sits at the head of several such features that feed the Potrail Water.
  • It is frequently climbed as part of a high-level circuit around the Daer Reservoir, often paired with the nearby Gana Hill.
  • The summit is marked by an Ordnance Survey triangulation pillar, serving as a useful navigation point in an area where the rounded, grassy topography can appear disorientingly similar in mist.
  • From the top, the views to the west are dominated by the 'golf ball' radar station on Great Lowther, while the Ettrick Hills are visible on a clear day to the east.
  • In this part of the Southern Uplands, a 'Height' is less of a peak and more of a very large, very green, and often very damp undulation in the landscape.
