Did You Know?
- •Just a stone's throw from The Pike lies Devoke Water, one of the largest and highest tarns in the Lake District. Despite its size, it's often wonderfully secluded, and on a clear day, its waters perfectly mirror the surrounding fells.
- •You're not just climbing The Pike; you're exploring the sprawling expanse of Birker Fell. This vast moorland is a treasure trove of ancient history, dotted with cairns, enclosures, and stone circles left by our Bronze Age ancestors.
- •The nearby hamlet of Woodend, nestled on the fellside, is claimed to have been an early Quaker settlement. A barn in a local farmyard, with its surprisingly fine mullioned windows, is believed to have been their original meeting house.
- •Don't get this Pike mixed up with its many, many namesakes across the Lakes! From Stickle Pike to Scafell Pike, the name simply means 'peak', so be sure you're heading for the right one above the Duddon Valley.
- •For a relatively modest height of 370 metres, The Pike really punches above its weight with the views it offers. On a good day, you get a fantastic perspective of the Scafell range, seeing England's highest mountain from a much quieter vantage point.
