About Slieveanorra

Situated within the rugged Antrim Mountains, this peat-draped Marilyn offers a sense of isolation that belies its modest height. While a tall communications mast occupies the summit, the surrounding plateau provides a wild walking experience, with sweeping views across the Slieveanurra Forest toward the neighbouring peak of Trostan.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Irish Sliabh an Earra, which translates as 'mountain of the tail' or 'mountain of the limit'. This likely refers to its position at the edge of the high ground or its historical role as a boundary between rival territories.
  • In 1583, the hill's slopes were the site of the Battle of Aura. The MacDonnell clan reportedly defeated the McQuillans by laying rushes over dangerous bog-holes, tricking their enemies into charging into the mire.
  • Near the summit stands a memorial to the crew of a USAAF Lockheed Hudson that crashed here in 1942. It serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly the Atlantic mists can swallow the ridge.
  • On a clear day, the summit provides an exceptional vantage point over the North Channel; walkers can frequently spot the white chalk cliffs of Rathlin Island and the distinctive profiles of the Paps of Jura on the Scottish horizon.
  • If you find yourself enjoying a firm, dry path through the heather, you have almost certainly wandered onto a maintenance track; the hill’s natural character is defined by a deep, unwavering commitment to peat hags and mire.
