• •The name Slieve Binnian derives from the Irish Sliabh Binneáin, meaning 'mountain of the little peaks.' This is a direct reference to the series of weathered granite tors, of which the North Tor is one of the most prominent and structurally impressive.
• •Standing on the tor provides a spectacular perspective of the Ben Crom Reservoir nestled deep in the valley below, with the steep, scree-covered flanks of Slieve Lamagan and the massive bulk of Slieve Donard visible to the northeast.
• •These tors were formed by 'exfoliation' or onion-skin weathering of the Mourne granite, where layers of rock peeled away over millennia to leave the distinctive, stacked-boulder appearance seen today.
