• •The name is a combination of the Northumbrian 'Law', meaning a prominent hill, and the local term 'shill', which refers to the shaly, scree-like stones found on its steep southern flanks.
• •Unlike many of its rolling neighbours, the hill is separated from the main Cheviot massif by a deep col at 343 metres; this topographical isolation earns it 'Marilyn' status, meaning it has a drop of at least 150 metres on all sides.
• •The summit offers a clear perspective of the winding Coquet Valley to the south, with the distinctive gritstone edges of the Simonside Hills and Harbottle Crags visible on the horizon beyond the village of Alwinton.
