About Shillhope Law

Rising steeply above the upper River Coquet, this grassy Cheviot Marilyn offers a surprising sense of isolation despite its modest height. Its sharp flanks fall away into deeply incised valleys, providing a vigorous climb from nearby Barrowburn. It serves as a fine introductory peak for those exploring the quieter southern fringes of the range.

Did You Know?

  • The name is a combination of the Northumbrian 'Law', meaning a prominent hill, and the local term 'shill', which refers to the shaly, scree-like stones found on its steep southern flanks.
  • Unlike many of its rolling neighbours, the hill is separated from the main Cheviot massif by a deep col at 343 metres; this topographical isolation earns it 'Marilyn' status, meaning it has a drop of at least 150 metres on all sides.
  • The summit offers a clear perspective of the winding Coquet Valley to the south, with the distinctive gritstone edges of the Simonside Hills and Harbottle Crags visible on the horizon beyond the village of Alwinton.
  • The hill sits on the edge of the Otterburn Training Area; while the summit itself remains open to walkers, the sound of distant artillery fire from the nearby ranges often provides a stark, mechanical soundtrack to the moorland silence.
  • It is one of the few hills in the region where the ascent manages to be both punishingly steep and entirely grassy, a combination that ensures a thorough calf workout while offering very little for the hands to scramble on.
