Did You Know?
- •The name is likely derived from the Gaelic 'Sealladh', meaning a view or lookout, combined with the Water of Minnoch which drains its southern slopes.
- •It marks the northern terminus of the evocatively named Range of the Awful Hand; a series of five ridges that, when viewed from above, resemble the fingers of a hand stretching out into the Galloway wilderness.
- •The summit offers a clear perspective south along the ridge toward Merrick, the highest point in southern Scotland, and west across the Firth of Clyde to the volcanic plug of Ailsa Craig.
- •Much of the ascent from the north follows a long, traditional drystone dyke that provides a reliable navigational handrail through the complex peat hags of the lower slopes.
- •For a hill whose name translates as 'View on the Minnoch', you may find yourself spending more time looking at your boots while navigating the initial kilometre of saturated bog from Stinchar Bridge.
