Did You Know?

  • The name Sgurr Thuilm translates from Scottish Gaelic as 'Peak of the Hillock' or 'Peak of the Knoll'. The term 'tolm' refers to a rounded hill or mound, likely describing the specific appearance of the summit when viewed from the glens below.
  • It forms the eastern pillar of the Glenfinnan Horseshoe, a classic high-level traverse that connects it to the neighbouring Munro, Sgurr nan Coireachan, via a narrow, twisting ridge that stays above 700 metres for several miles.
  • From the summit cairn, the view north across the 'Rough Bounds of Knoydart' is exceptional, revealing a chaotic sea of peaks including Ladhar Bheinn and Luinne Bheinn, while the unmistakable silhouette of Ben Nevis dominates the eastern horizon.
  • The approach from the south follows the path of the River Finnan, passing directly under the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct. While the valley floor is often crowded with film fans, the slopes of Sgurr Thuilm remain the preserve of walkers seeking solitude.
  • While the Glenfinnan Viaduct draws thousands of visitors hoping to spot a magical steam train, Sgurr Thuilm ensures that those who want the best view of the landscape have to work for it with over 1,000 metres of relentless climbing.
