About Sgurr an Doire Leathain

Rising as a central pillar of the South Glen Shiel Ridge, this high Munro offers a classic day of high-altitude walking. Its steep, grassy slopes give way to a narrow ridge-line, providing dramatic views across the deep glen to the Five Sisters of Kintail and the remote peaks of Knoydart.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Scottish Gaelic as 'Peak of the Broad Wood'. While the summit is now a world of bare rock and grass, the name likely refers to ancient woodland that once occupied the lower corries and sheltered glens nearby.
  • It is almost always climbed as part of the South Glen Shiel Ridge traverse, a celebrated ten-mile march that bags seven Munros in a single high-level outing starting from the A87.
  • The summit provides an exceptional vantage point over the sprawling, island-studded waters of Loch Quoich to the south, with the distinctive pointed peak of Sgùrr na Cìche visible in the distance.
  • Looking north, the view is dominated by the sharp, serrated profile of the Five Sisters of Kintail, offering a clear perspective on the complex topography of the Northwest Highlands.
  • Despite the name, any hiker searching for a 'broad wood' at the 1,010-metre summit will be disappointed to find nothing more than a stone cairn and a very long drop.
