Did You Know?

  • The name Sgùrr a' Mhaoraich translates from Gaelic as the 'Peak of the Shellfish'. This curious title is generally thought to refer to the abundance of large land snails found on its slopes, which thrive here due to localized patches of more fertile soil than is typical for the region.
  • The summit offers one of the most celebrated viewpoints in the West Highlands, looking directly into the 'Rough Bounds of Knoydart' and across the sea to the jagged Black Cuillin on the Isle of Skye.
  • The mountain's relationship with the landscape changed significantly in the 1950s with the construction of the Quoich dam; the rising waters drowned the old lodge at the hill's foot and created the current shoreline from which most walkers now begin their ascent.
  • While many surrounding Munros are commonly linked in long, high-level circuits, this hill is often climbed as a standalone objective via its southeastern ridge, a route that avoids the peat hags found on the lower northern approaches.
  • Given the name, a walker might expect a seafood platter at the cairn, but you are far more likely to be greeted by a persistent west-coast gale and a very long drive back to civilization for a celebratory meal.
