About Na Gruagaichean

Tucked into the eastern reach of the Mamores, this twin-peaked Munro is defined by a sharp, rocky connecting ridge. The climb from Kinlochleven is a sustained effort, but the payoff is a clear sightline across the abyss of the Nevis gorge to the massive south face of Ben Nevis.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Scottish Gaelic as "The Maidens," referring to the mountain’s distinctive twin summits. While "gruagach" literally means a long-haired girl, in regional folklore, it often referred to a guardian spirit or brownie that was said to watch over the local cattle.
  • The mountain features two distinct tops joined by a narrow, rocky ridge. While the 1,054-metre south summit is the official Munro top, the 1,041-metre north-west top is arguably the better vantage point for looking directly down the ridge toward the nearby Grey Corries.
  • The summit offers one of the finest profiles of Ben Nevis available. Looking across the deep cleft of the Water of Nevis, you can see the full vertical scale of the Ben’s southern flanks, a perspective that makes the UK’s highest peak look appropriately massive.
  • To the south-east, the summit overlooks the Blackwater Reservoir. Completed in 1909, it was the largest dam in Europe at the time and was built to provide hydroelectric power for the aluminium smelter in Kinlochleven—the industry that gave the town its "Electric Village" nickname.
  • For a mountain named "The Maidens," the terrain is notably lacking in delicacy, consisting mostly of relentless quartzite scree and steep grass that will test the ankles of even the most chivalrous hillwalker.
