Did You Know?

  • The name is Scottish Gaelic for 'the summit of the corrie of Farquhar’s son,' referencing the massive, craggy bowl on its northern flank which is shared with its neighbour, Sgùrr Ban.
  • As the highest peak in the Fisherfield Forest, it sits at the heart of the 'Great Wilderness,' a vast area where the nearest public road is a full day's march away.
  • From the summit, the view south is dominated by the fortress-like bulk of Slioch and the shimmering waters of Lochan Fada, framed by the sheer cliffs of the Letterewe Forest.
  • The mountain is the centrepiece of the 'Fisherfield Six' circuit; although Beinn a' Chlaidheimh was demoted to Corbett status in 2011, few walkers are willing to bypass it after travelling this far into the wild.
  • Its upper slopes are covered in white Cambrian quartzite, a rock type that reflects sunlight so intensely it can give the summit a shimmering, snow-covered appearance even in the height of summer.
  • Given the minimum twenty-mile round trip required to reach it from the nearest road, the summit cairn is less a place for celebration and more a place for questioning one's life choices.
