About Monadh Mor

Tucked deep within the Cairngorm wilderness, this remote Munro sits on the edge of the vast, high-altitude Moine Mhòr plateau. It offers a desolate, arctic-tundra feel and is most frequently paired with neighbouring Beinn Bhrotain. From the summit, the view across the Lairig Ghru to the massive cliffs of Braeriach is exceptional.

Did You Know?

  • The name comes from the Scottish Gaelic Monadh Mòr, translating simply as 'Great Hill'. In this region, 'Monadh' typically refers to an extensive area of high, rolling moorland or a mountain range, which accurately describes its position overlooking the vast Moine Mhòr plateau.
  • It stands as a sentinel over the Moine Mhòr, or 'Great Moss', a massive expanse of high-altitude peat bog and tundra reaching over 1,000 metres. This area is one of the most remote landscapes in the UK and frequently retains snow patches well into the summer months.
  • Reaching the summit usually requires a significant expedition, often involving a long approach through Glen Feshie to the west or Glen Derry to the east. It is almost universally climbed in tandem with its neighbour Beinn Bhrotain, connected by a high, rocky col at 975 metres.
  • From the summit cairn, there is a commanding and unusually direct perspective into the deep cleft of the Lairig Ghru, with the jagged profile of The Devil’s Point appearing surprisingly small against the massive eastern face of Braeriach.
  • Navigating the Moine Mhòr in thick mist provides a masterclass in why 'The Great Moss' was named so; after a few miles of heather-hopping and bog-trotting in circles, the 'Great Hill' starts to feel less like a destination and more like a myth.
