About Moel Llyfnant

Standing at 750 metres, Moel Llyfnant is the Arenig range’s best-kept secret for those who find nearby Arenig Fawr a bit too mainstream. It’s a rugged, rocky affair that promises spectacular views and the blissful silence of being entirely alone with your questionable navigational choices.

Did You Know?

  • It sits proudly as a Hewitt, a classification for hills in England and Wales over 2,000 feet with at least a 30-metre drop. This classification ensures you’ll feel every bit of that elevation gain in your calves.
  • The western ridge terminates at Gallt y Daren, a distinctive twin-peaked feature that adds a bit of architectural flair to the skyline. It provides an excellent vantage point to judge the progress of walkers struggling up the main mass.
  • The summit is marked by a modest stone cairn perched atop a rocky outcrop rather than a grand trig pillar. It’s the kind of understated peak that doesn’t feel the need to show off with modern masonry.
  • Views from the top are dominated by the massive bulk of Arenig Fawr to the east and Rhobell Fawr to the south. It’s the ideal place to look at a much larger mountain and feel smug about your niche taste in summits.
  • The approach from the east involves crossing the notorious bogs of the Afon Amnodd-wen, a landscape that identifies primarily as a sponge. Expect to spend half your day performing an unplanned, mud-spattered ballet while praying your Gore-Tex holds its end of the bargain.
