Did You Know?

  • The name Moel Famau translates from Welsh as 'Mother Hill'—derived from 'moel', meaning a bare or bald hill, and 'famau', a mutation of 'mamau' (mothers). It is the highest point in the Clwydian Range.
  • The summit is crowned by the ruins of the Jubilee Tower, commissioned in 1810 to celebrate the golden jubilee of King George III. Designed in an Egyptian style, it was never fully completed and partially collapsed during a severe storm in 1862.
  • The Offa’s Dyke National Trail passes directly over the summit, following the approximate line of the 8th-century earthwork constructed by King Offa of Mercia to define the border between his kingdom and the Welsh principalities.
  • On a clear day, the summit offers an extraordinary cross-section of geography: to the west lie the high peaks of the Carneddau and the Glyderau, while to the northeast, the cranes of the Liverpool docks and the turbines of Liverpool Bay are clearly visible.
  • The hill's geology is distinct from the volcanic rock of the higher mountains to the west, consisting primarily of Silurian siltstones and mudstones that create its characteristic rounded, undulating profile.
  • The Jubilee Tower was intended to be a grand monument to a king, but a classic combination of budget shortfalls and a very powerful gale has left walkers with what is effectively Britain's most over-engineered windbreak.
