About Meall Glas

Rising above Glen Dochart near Crianlarich, this Munro offers a steady climb over typically damp, grassy slopes. While often overshadowed by its more famous neighbours, the rocky summit crest provides a fine vantage point for surveying the massive north faces of Ben More and Stob Binnein across the glen.

Did You Know?

  • The name is Gaelic for ‘green-grey hill’, describing the characteristic blend of rocky outcrops and the vibrant, often waterlogged mosses and grasses found on its slopes.
  • It is typically climbed alongside the neighbouring Munro, Sgiath Chuil; however, the two are separated by the notoriously boggy Bealach Shealaich, which requires a significant and often squelchy loss of height between summits.
  • From the summit, the view south is dominated by the enormous forms of Ben More and Stob Binnein, while to the north, the sprawling Ben Lawers range is visible across the depths of Glen Lochay.
  • The mountain features a secondary western top named Meall nan Tarmachan; despite sharing its name with the famous ridge near Killin, this smaller peak is significantly quieter and rarely visited as a standalone objective.
  • The ascent from Glen Dochart provides an excellent litmus test for the waterproof rating of your footwear, as the lower slopes are legendary for their ability to hide deep bog beneath an innocent-looking carpet of grass.
