About Meall Beag

Tucked away near Ben Vorlich, Meall Beag is the 'Small Hill' that gets routinely ignored by Munro-baggers in a hurry. It’s a rocky little gem offering superb views of the Loch Sloy dam, providing all the Arrochar atmosphere with none of the 'conga line' summit queues.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Gaelic as 'Small Hill', which is a classic bit of Scottish understatement for a 600-meter peak. It stands as a rugged sentinel on the southern approach to the much larger Ben Vorlich.
  • The area is overlooked by the Loch Sloy hydro-electric scheme, which was a massive post-war engineering project. From this vantage point, you can see the giant conduits that carry water down to the power station on Loch Lomond.
  • Geologically, the fell is composed of schist from the Dalradian Supergroup, dating back over 500 million years. This rock provides excellent grip for hikers, though it becomes notoriously slick the moment a Scottish drizzle begins.
  • The summit cairn is so modest that it is frequently overlooked by those focused on the horizon. You might find yourself standing on the highest point without even realizing it, which is quite a humble way to summit.
  • It is the perfect place to experience 'summit envy' while watching the crowds on the nearby Cobbler. You can enjoy your sandwiches in total peace while they wait in a literal queue just to touch a rock.
