About Llechwedd y Glyn

Situated above the Afon Castell in the southern reaches of the Pumlumon range, this grassy, often boggy upland offers a quiet alternative to the main summits. Its rounded slopes provide a front-row seat to the massive scale of Pumlumon Fawr and the wild, rolling moorland of the Cambrian Mountains.

You are walking over layers of ancient mud and sand. These sediments shifted and slid together long ago, eventually hardening into the solid rock beneath your feet.

Did You Know?

  • In Welsh, the name translates as 'The Slope of the Glen.' Llechwedd refers to a hillside or hanging slope, while y Glyn identifies its position above the deep, carved valley of the Afon Castell which runs along its western foot.
  • The terrain is largely trackless and consists of the classic Mid Wales mix of purple moor grass and peat hags. It is most frequently visited as part of a wider exploration of the southern Cambrian moorlands, often approached from the A44 near Eisteddfod Gurig.
  • From the 481-metre summit, the view north is dominated by the sprawling profile of the Pumlumon massif. Looking south, the horizon is filled by the whale-backed ridges of the Elan Valley hills, with the peak of Drygarn Fawr often visible on a clear day.
  • While its status as a Hump and a Tump ensures a steady trickle of peak-baggers, the lack of a defined path means you are far more likely to encounter a startled sheep than a fellow hiker.
