About Llanmadoc Hill

Llanmadoc Hill is less a mountain and more Gower’s scenic spine. At 186m, it won’t give you altitude sickness, but the panoramic views across Rhossili Bay and the Bristol Channel are punchy enough to make your lungs believe they’re actually doing some proper mountain work.

Did You Know?

  • The hill is crowned by 'The Bulwark,' a formidable Iron Age hillfort with multi-layered ramparts. It suggests our ancestors prioritized a killer view of the Atlantic over easy access to the local amenities.
  • Geologically, the hill is an island of Old Red Sandstone. This stubborn rock resisted the erosion that flattened the surrounding limestone, creating the Gower Peninsula's most prominent and enduring landmark.
  • From the ridge, you can spot the Whiteford Lighthouse, which is Britain’s only surviving wave-swept cast-iron lighthouse. It is a marvelous piece of Victorian engineering that looks like a giant, salt-crusted pepper pot.
  • The summit offers a rare 360-degree vantage point where you can see the Brecon Beacons to the north and the Devon coast to the south. Of course, this assumes the Welsh mist isn't currently using the hill as a convenient place to nap.
  • The summit ridge is so deceptively broad and flat that you’ll likely spend ten minutes pacing back and forth trying to find the highest tuft of grass, much to the silent, chewing derision of the local sheep.
