About Leum Uilleim

Rising steeply above the remote Corrour station, this prominent Corbett offers a sense of isolation rarely found so close to a railway. The ascent crosses rough, often boggy ground before reaching a stony ridge. From the summit, the vast, watery expanse of Rannoch Moor unfolds toward the peaks of the Black Mount.

Did You Know?

  • The name Leum Uilleim is Gaelic for 'William’s Leap'. Local tradition suggests it commemorates a hunter who successfully jumped a narrow, deep chasm on the mountain’s slopes while fleeing from pursuers.
  • This is one of the most accessible remote hills in the Highlands, provided you arrive by rail. Most walkers start from Corrour, the UK’s highest mainland railway station, which has no public road access and is located on the West Highland Line.
  • The hill gained international fame in the film Trainspotting; the scene where the characters arrive in the Highlands for some 'fresh air' was filmed at the foot of Leum Uilleim, on the platform of Corrour station.
  • The summit offers a unique perspective on the 'Big Six' of the Ben Alder forest to the east and a panoramic view of the Mamores to the north, with the Cruach Sneachda ridge providing a fine high-level circuit for those with time before the return train.
  • While it feels like a mountain of significant stature, it missed out on Munro status by just eight metres, ensuring it remains significantly quieter than the 3,000ft peaks nearby.
  • Success on this hill is less about your navigation and more about your timekeeping; if you miss the final train back to Fort William or Glasgow, your options for accommodation are limited to a very long walk or a very cold platform.
