About High Brow

This modest, grassy shoulder of Stybarrow Dodd offers a quieter alternative to the busy Helvellyn ridge. Rising above Glenridding, it provides a superb, unobstructed vantage point over the length of Ullswater. Its position makes it a rewarding detour for those ticking off Birketts while traversing the sprawling Eastern Fells.

Did You Know?

  • The name is descriptive of its topography, using the Middle English 'brow' to denote a prominent ridge or the 'forehead' of a hill, marking the point where the broad slopes of Stybarrow Dodd drop away toward the valley.
  • Though overlooked by Alfred Wainwright, the summit is championed by Bill Birkett in his 'Complete Lakeland Fells,' where it is listed for its exceptional position overlooking the Glencoyne and Glenridding valleys.
  • The summit provides a unique perspective of Ullswater’s 'middle reach', framed by the steep slopes of Sheffield Pike to the south and the sprawling Brackenburn flanks to the north.
  • Walkers often visit High Brow as part of a circular route from Glenridding, ascending via the chimney-like Glencoyne North Wood before continuing onto the main ridge towards Watson's Dodd.
  • It is the ideal destination for the walker who values a clear view of the lake more than the prestige of a crowded summit further along the ridge.
