About Harter Fell (Eskdale)

Standing sentinel between Eskdale and Dunnerdale, this craggy, conical Wainwright is a rugged standout among the Southern Fells. The summit is crowned by fractured rock tors that provide an elevated grandstand for viewing the Scafell massif across the deep trench of Upper Eskdale, with the Isle of Man often visible westward.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Old Norse 'hjortr' (hart or stag) and 'fjall' (fell), marking it as the 'Hill of the Stags'. This reflects the historical presence of red deer in the wooded valleys of Eskdale and Dunnerdale that flank the mountain.
  • Alfred Wainwright held the fell in high regard, describing it as 'a peak that is a peak' and noting its independence from the main ridges. He specifically recommended the ascent from the top of Hardknott Pass to fully appreciate its craggy, conical profile.
  • The summit area is notable for its three distinct rocky tors. While the central outcrop is the true summit, the western tor offers the most vertiginous view straight down into the depths of Eskdale towards the village of Boot.
  • Most walkers combine a climb of Harter Fell with a visit to the nearby Hardknott Roman Fort (Mediobogdum). From the fell's slopes, the strategic layout of the fort is clearly visible, guarding the ancient pass between the coast and the central fells.
  • Reaching the actual highest point requires a brief but awkward scramble onto the summit tor; many walkers are content to touch the rock and call it a day rather than risk an undignified descent on their backsides.
