• •The name derives from the Old Norse 'hjortr' (hart or stag) and 'fjall' (fell), marking it as the 'Hill of the Stags'. This reflects the historical presence of red deer in the wooded valleys of Eskdale and Dunnerdale that flank the mountain.
• •Alfred Wainwright held the fell in high regard, describing it as 'a peak that is a peak' and noting its independence from the main ridges. He specifically recommended the ascent from the top of Hardknott Pass to fully appreciate its craggy, conical profile.
• •The summit area is notable for its three distinct rocky tors. While the central outcrop is the true summit, the western tor offers the most vertiginous view straight down into the depths of Eskdale towards the village of Boot.
