About Great Knoutberry Hill

Rising between the deep trenches of Garsdale and Dentdale, this broad, peat-capped Marilyn offers a sense of immense scale. Often quieter than its famous neighbours, the summit rewards walkers with an exceptional vista of the Three Peaks and the rolling Howgill Fells. The ascent from Dent Station is particularly evocative.

Did You Know?

  • The name originates from 'Knoutberry,' the local Northern English term for the cloudberry. These orange-fleshed berries are members of the rose family and thrive in the acidic, high-altitude peat bogs that characterise the summit plateau.
  • Its position provides a bird’s-eye view of the Settle-Carlisle Railway. From the western slopes, you can look directly down onto the Arten Gill Viaduct, seeing its eleven massive limestone arches spanning the valley floor.
  • The hill is a highlight of the Pennine Bridleway, which skirts its eastern flanks. For those arriving by rail, the climb from Dent Station—the highest mainline station in England—is the classic approach.
  • The summit is marked by a Ordnance Survey trig point tucked inside a stone windbreak. From this vantage point, the distinctive flat-topped profile of Ingleborough and the long ridge of Whernside are clearly visible to the south.
  • While the name suggests botanical abundance, the reality of the terrain means you are far more likely to find a deep, boot-swallowing peat hag than a bountiful harvest of fruit.
