About Fraoch Bheinn

Rising steeply above the head of Glen Finnan, this rugged Corbett offers a quieter alternative to its neighbouring Munros. Characterised by its heathery slopes and craggy outcrops, the summit provides an exceptional, direct perspective of the jagged Knoydart peaks and the dramatic, silver length of Loch Shiel.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Scottish Gaelic as 'Heather Hill', a fitting description for the thick vegetation that blankets its lower slopes and provides a testing workout for the legs before the rockier upper ridges are reached.
  • Hillwalkers often pair this summit with the neighbouring Munro, Sgùrr nan Coireachan, by following the high ridge that connects them around the head of the glen, creating a classic horseshoe walk above Glenfinnan.
  • From the summit cairn, the view northwest looks directly into the 'Rough Bounds of Knoydart', with the distinctive pointed pyramid of Sgùrr na Cìche standing out clearly amongst a sea of complex, interlocking ridges.
  • While thousands of tourists visit the Glenfinnan Viaduct below to watch the steam train, few look north to this skyline; consequently, you are far more likely to share the summit with a red deer than another human.
  • Calling it 'Heather Hill' is a classic piece of Highland understatement; on a particularly wet West Coast afternoon, the lower ascent is less of a walk and more of a vertical swimming lesson through saturated shrubbery.
