Did You Know?

  • It dominates the skyline of Pontrhydyfen, the village where Hollywood legend Richard Burton was born. He likely spent his youth staring at these slopes before trading the valley for the glitz of Elizabeth Taylor.
  • The area was once a powerhouse of the coal mining industry, and the hill overlooks the impressive 19th-century railway viaduct and aqueduct known as Y Bont Fawr. It’s a perfect spot to appreciate how humans once carved up the landscape.
  • Its name translates roughly to 'Hill of the Mountains,' which feels a bit like naming a pet dog 'Dog of the Canines.' It is certainly confident in its identity, if nothing else.
  • Sitting at the confluence of the River Afan and Afon Pelenna, it acts as a topographical divider between two lush, narrow valleys. It is the highest point in the immediate vicinity, making it the local king of the hill.
  • While only 370 meters high, the ascent from the valley floor is surprisingly vertical. Your calves will remind you that 'small' hills in South Wales are actually just mountains that haven't quite finished growing but still have plenty of attitude.
